The Tustin Unified School District has appointed Shannon James as principal of W.R. Nelson Elementary School. She will take over for Mindy Smith, who will become principal of Orchard Hills School. James will begin her new position on July 1.
James has worked in education for 21 years. She currently serves as the director of Assessment and Professional Development in the San Gabriel Unified School District. Her prior experience includes director of Research and Evaluation, Local Education Agency/California Longitudinal Pupil Achievement Data System (LEA/CALPADs) administrator, elementary program facilitator, elementary instructional coach and elementary teacher.
“Shannon is a quality person and offers excellent preparation and experience to continue the good work at Nelson,” Superintendent Dr. Gregory Franklin said. “I look forward to having her join TUSD’s management team.”
James has a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of California, Irvine, and a master’s degree in education from National University. She is also an affiliate member of the Orange County CUE (Computer-Using Educators) organization and the EdLeader21 Network, a national professional learning community designed exclusively for 21st century education leaders.
“I’m excited for the opportunity to work with the teachers and staff, and to meet the students and parents in the Nelson school community,” James said. “I’m committed to ensuring all students learn at high levels and I will work collaboratively with families, students and staff to continue moving the school forward.”
