TUSD school nurse Pam Atkins is no stranger to photography competitions and events. Pam is a talented photographer who enjoys taking pictures of animals, nature and landscapes. She has won several awards and honors for her work. This year, her photo entitled “Dandelion Days” was chosen out of 6,000 entries for the 2019 Orange County Fair. The photo was taken during a camping trip at Hart Bar Campgrounds in Big Bear. As Pam was packing to leave, she saw a phenomenon called a 22 degree sun halo. These clouds contain millions of tiny ice crystals. The halos are caused by both refraction or splitting of light and reflection or glints of light from the ice crystals. The crystals have to be oriented and positioned just so with respect to your eye in order for the halo to appear. Wow! So check out Pam’s photo, which is on display in the Visual Arts Gallery at the OC Fair through August 11. You’ll have a tree-mendous time!
