Let’s taco ‘bout C.E. Utt Middle School’s new AVID Salsa Garden. The school received a grant from the Orange County Community Foundation to fund the garden. Advancement Via Individual Determination or AVID is an in-school academic support program that prepares students for college eligibility and success. Above, AVID students Mia Polito, Briana Alarcon, Alyssa Ruiz, Kayleen Shaverdi, Morgan Edwards, Edgar Lara and Nathan Avina are seen tending the garden. The Utt AVID garden helps promote healthy eating on campus as well as nutritional value, according to AVID teacher Jennifer Kang-Rodriguez. “This is a great leadership opportunity for AVID students to guide special-needs students to help maintain the garden,” she said. When fruits and vegetables are grown, AVID students work with special-needs classes to prepare salsa and invite all students to a tasting during lunchtime. The garden also has a nurturing environment for staff and students to enjoy throughout the day. Does the salsa garden create lasting friend-chips? Nacho-rally!
