The Tustin Unified School District has announced three administrative moves, which will begin July 1, for the 2020-21 school year.
Garrett Kerr, coordinator of Educational Technology, has been appointed assistant principal at Sycamore Magnet Academy (formerly Thorman Elementary/Currie Middle schools). He takes over for Mike Velez.
Garrett has worked in public education for 20 years and served in his current position for the past seven years. Prior to that, Garrett was assistant principal at Pioneer Middle School. Garrett started at Lambert Elementary School and taught fourth and fifth grades, and served as technology coordinator. He was named Lambert Teacher of the Year in 2009. He has also served as a technology trainer for TUSD and the Orange County Department of Education.
Sycamore Magnet Academy is a TK-8 magnet school designed for students who wish to pursue their interests in global studies, media arts and communication. Sycamore is also home to the TUSD Spanish Dual Language Immersion Program for TK through fifth-grade students (program will eventually include grades 6-8).
Mike Velez, assistant principal at Currie Middle School, will become assistant principal at Pioneer Middle School. He takes over for Troy Fresch.
Mike has worked in public education for 36 years and served as assistant principal at Currie for the past six years. Prior to Currie, he was an assistant principal at Foothill High School. During his career, Mike has also worked as a middle and high school teacher, and guidance counselor. Mike has served as an assistant principal in TUSD since 2004 and brings many years of administrative experience to Pioneer.
Troy Fresch, assistant principal at Pioneer Middle School, has been named assistant principal at Hewes Middle School. He will replace Katie Males, who is returning to the classroom.
Troy has been assistant principal at Pioneer for the past six years. Prior to that he was an assistant principal at Tustin High. He has worked in public education for 17 years. Troy served as an English teacher and activities director at Beckman High School, and taught seventh-grade Core social studies and English at Currie Middle School. He was selected as Orange County Secondary Co-Administrator of the Year in 2015 by the Association of School Administrators (ACSA), Region 17.
“All three administrators will do a great job in their new assignments,” TUSD Superintendent Dr. Gregory Franklin said. “TUSD is committed to ensuring all students learn at high levels and these dedicated educators will work collaboratively with the staff, students and families to continue moving their schools forward.”
