The Doug Fischer Memorial Concert will be held on Saturday, October 27, at 11 a.m. in the gymnasium at Beckman High School, 3588 Bryan Avenue, Irvine. The program is a celebration of Doug’s life.
The concert will be conducted by Beckman Music Director Jim Kollias. The participants will include Beckman’s String Orchestra, Wind Ensemble and Choirs; Pioneer Middle School Band; and Doug’s son, Sean, who will play the cello. There will also be guest speakers and special videos.
Doug passed away last June and was a longtime instrumental music teacher at Pioneer Middle School in the Tustin Unified School District. Prior to Pioneer, he served as a band teacher at Columbus Tustin Middle School and Tustin High School. He worked in public education for 36 years – 28 of those as a band and orchestra teacher in TUSD.
Among his accomplishments, Doug was named TUSD Teacher of the Year in 2004 and represented the District in the Orange County Teachers of the Year Program. He was selected as Outstanding Music Educator at the World of Music Festival, was a member of the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association, and served as band director for the Wildwood Music Institute, a summer music camp for students. Doug was also honored as a quarterfinalist for the 2019 GRAMMY Music Educator of the Year.
Over the years, many of Doug’s students have been selected to several prestigious music groups, such as All-Southern California Middle School Honor Band, All-Southern California Middle School String Orchestra and All-Southern California Middle School Honor Full Orchestra. A number of his students also have made a career in music. The impact Doug had on music education for Tustin Unified students is immeasurable.
