Here’s an egg-citing science project that will crack you up. C.E. Utt Middle School recently held an Egg Drop Contest, coordinated by egg-ceptional eighth-grade science teachers Laura Barajas and Melanie Formaneck. Students eggs-tended their learning about forces and motion by developing an egg drop device to protect a raw egg from a fall. Students designed their own egg-stra special devices using common materials such as cotton, bubble wrap, steel wool, foam containers, straws, coffee filters, packing peanuts and homemade parachutes. More than 400 eggstatic seventh and eighth graders, including students (above) Jordin Toomes, Andrew Olsen and Kendell Lynch, participated in the egg drop over a two-day period. Orange County Fire Authority Station 43 in Tustin brought the firetruck. Fire Captain Todd Lockwood and his crew eggspertly dropped the devices from 15.5 meters off the top of the ladder. Nearly 60 eggs survived the fall. It was an egg-straordinary sight to see!
